A mountain killed a lamb in the Pattee Canyon area. MFWP is monitoring situation.

BEAR UPDATE
April 24, 2015

Black bear hunting season has begun. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) reports there are many bears still in or near their dens. Some collared grizzly bears are still in dens. Usually around the 1st of May is when most bears emerge, including cubs of the year. Please carry bear spray and pay attention to your surroundings when recreating and working in bear country. FWP is still receiving multiple reports of grizzly bear activity in the Blackfoot and Clearwater drainages.

Rattlesnake: FWP reports that a small cub of the year was found dead near Spring Gulch from unknown causes. Given their size and vulnerability, cubs of the year are susceptible to many things from weather to predators.

BLACK BEAR UPDATE
April 22, 2015

South Hills: A black bear accessed garbage in the Grandview area of the South Hills. FWP is working with Republic Services and the landowner to find a bear-resistant solution for garbage.

Big Flat: A black bear accessed some birdfeeders. FWP requested that the landowner take down the birdfeeders.

Rattlesnake: There was a report of a bear accessing garbage in the Rattlesnake.

MOUNTAIN LION UPDATE
April 20, 2015

There was a report of mountain lion in the western portion of the South Hills area. FWP is monitoring the area for activity. If you see a mountain lion please call 542-5500. All mule deer, whitetail and elk are down low for spring green-up. It is common for there to be an increase in mountain lion sightings and activity down low in the valleys during this time.

Blackfoot Valley: There was one report of female with cubs of the year.

Ovando area: A grizzly bear broke into a grain shed and tore up feed bags. FWP has set traps for this bear. Please contain grain in a bear-resistant manner when possible.

Rattlesnake: A female black bear with two sub-adult cubs has been seen near Duncan Drive and the reservoir. No conflicts at this time. Please contain garbage in a bear-resistant manner and bring in birdfeeders.

Bitterroot: There was a report of a mountain lion on a porch in the Bitterroot. FWP is monitoring.

GRIZZLY BEAR UPDATE

Grizzly bear activity continues to increase, particularly in the Blackfoot valley. Black bear hunters: Know your bear species! Please carry and know how to use bear spray and pay close attention to your surroundings. FWP reports that in the Blackfoot there are more grizzly bears being observed that black bears.

BLACK BEAR UPDATE

Rattlesnake: There are multiple bears active in the Rattlesnake. It is time to bring in bird feeders and secure garbage in a bear-resistant manner.

Greenough Park: A black bear was seen in Greenough Park on Saturday, April 11th . FWP monitored the bear for the afternoon and evening and the bear appears to have moved on.

Jumbo Saddle: A female black bear with two sub-adult cubs has been seen on repeated occasions on the Jumbo Saddle. Please be aware of your surroundings and carry bear spray when hiking in bear country.

MOUNTAIN LION UPDATE

Superior: One lion was killed in the Superior area after killing a goat. The landowner is looking at electric fence options to prevent this from happening again.

Lower Ninemile: A mountain lion killed a deer near a home. The landowner moved the carcass to a more remote site to avoid conflicts.

Blackfoot and Clearwater Drainages: Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) continues to field reports of grizzly bear activity. Tracks have been observed throughout the area by ranchers and recreationists.

BLACK BEAR UPDATE

Rattlesnake: A mother with two yearlings was seen yesterday in the Upper Rattlesnake. There is probably an additional bear active in the lower Rattlesnake. Garbage has already been scattered and scat full of birdseed has been seen. Please contain all attractants and bring in birdfeeders. Missoula Animal Control and FWP will be monitoring the Missoula Bear Buffer Zone and will be issuing tickets if garbage is accessed by bears.

South Hills: There have been reports of a mountain lion near the base of the South Hills. FWP investigated and was unable to confirm these reports.

Superior: A mountain lion killed a goat. FWP and Wildlife Services are following this situation.

Grant Creek – A mountain lion was spotted by residents passing through the Grant Creek area.

Mount Jumbo – An early morning hiker saw a mountain lion north of the Jumbo Trail near Vine Street last Saturday.
